Gauteng Department of Education is embracing the 4th Industrial Revolution, as evidenced by the establishment of Schools of Specialisation (SoS) in disadvantaged township schools. These township schools were neglected during the apartheid era. GDE is implementing the policy on ICT as enunciated in the National Integrated Information and Communication (ICT) Policy White Paper: The SoS are already functional. The aim of this study is to investigate whether teachers are using ICT/Subject Content integration strategies effectively in teaching and learning.

Establishing specialised technological schools is one thing, and making sure that they operate smoothly as expected is another. Therefore, this study is important in that it will examine classroom practices in SoS and diagnose challenges that must be resolved to make the ICT integration a success. Good practices will be highlighted so that other schools, even those outside SoS, can emulate and strive to improve on them.
